Local History

Ballyneale is steeped in local history and the children of Ballyneale NS are taught to engage with and respect their past.  History trails have been devised to local sites of historical importance such as Ballyneale Castle and Kilmurray graveyard.

The children are encouraged to learn about their past through song and story.  The school nestles in the valley of Majestic Slievenamon while Kilcash is also close by.

Ballyneale NS most famous past pupil is Thomas F. Kiely (1876 – 1885) who won the first Gold Olympic Medal for Ireland in St. Louis in 1904.

The Old School Registers books dating back to 1876 have been restored with funding from the local community.  These books are a great source of delight for the children and are an invaluable historical resource for the community.

The school has a collection of old photographs of pupils who attended the school from 1926 to the present day which is a source of much interest to the local people.
